When I created the collage Frauenrechte (Women’s Rights), I had, as artists often do, the urge to create more than just one work. As a woman, I wanted to use this piece effectively—sarcastically and compellingly—to address the still widespread injustice where women’s viewpoints and opinions are dismissed, and they are reduced to mere sexual objects. And I succeeded! Multiple times, even.
The collage was published in the ASLI Magazine by Art Saves Lives International as part of the “Celebration of Women” initiative, accompanied by an interview: Artist Monika Mori Explores Frauenrechte (Women’s Rights) With Visual Art.
“One in Five” – Lecture Series
Together with the Department of Forensic Medicine at MedUni Vienna, the Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters (AÖF) organized an interdisciplinary lecture series, which began with an event at the Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art in Vienna—and my collage was included! The piece was also featured in the activity report of the AÖF (Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters)—www.aoef.at. A signed print now hangs in the AÖF office.
Publications and Exhibitions
The collage was published in the book Seductive by Black Scat Books (Derek Pell, Los Angeles, USA) under the title Three by MOO.
It was exhibited as part of Qui est Je? Chi è Io? Who is I? in Chauny, France, participated as a postcard in the Moda Mujer international project in Paraguay, and found its place in Istanbul, Turkey within the projects Women’s Rights for Projesi and Masculine Violence.
A Deeply Personal Work
The significance of remembering—of making something truly remarkable—means a great deal to me, especially with this work. Being a woman myself, I have experienced since my early youth how often we are ridiculed, ignored, and vilified when we express our own opinions and perspectives—especially in traditionally male-dominated fields. The degradation into a mere sexual object requires no explanation. Being reduced to a mere thing for physical desire was, and remains, deeply repugnant to me.On Facebook, there is an album dedicated to the fascinating journey of my collage Frauenrechte | Women´s Rights
